After posting a record of 7-4 in 2024 and 7-3 in 2023, the Liggett Knights football team’s record was 1-8 this year, getting outscored 279-42 over nine games, raising questions about the program.
After losing several key seniors from last year, the team had to rely on younger players, starting four freshmen, who represented 36% of the total starters. Senior Liam Kurtz said, “very few programs have this many freshmen that are starting on the team.” Grosse Pointe South, by comparison, had zero freshmen on the entire varsity team.
The lowest point of the season was the 0-62 Homecoming game loss. Spectator Charlie Laethem said the team looked “very slow” and “very repetitive on the plays.”
Kurtz said morale was “not good,” adding, “we may have been a little bit distracted with the festivities.”
Athletic Director Brian Anderson said the Knights played tough opponents this year because “you get moved up based on things that kids that aren't going to play for you next year already did.”
The team’s only success came in a 14-6 win against Bishop Foley in week 3. Liggett faced Bishop Foley again in the final matchup of the season. The Knights lost the game 0-17.
Junior Ollie Cooley said the team hasn’t had “the season that we were hoping for.”
Kurtz also added, “This is not how I wanted my senior year to go.”
While it was a rough season overall, Liggett football hopes for a brighter future.
