Most seniors have privileges at University Liggett School. They are allowed to leave campus between 12:50 and 1:35 p.m. for lunch as long as they follow the sign-in and sign-out procedures and re-enter through the main doors.
Privileges give students freedom to choose where they go, but it raises attention to spending habits. With so many food options close by, students create new spending habits throughout the week.
Matthew Lapolla, assistant head of school and dean of students, said safety is priority. “As long as parents are okay with it and the seniors follow the protocols we have set out, then I’m okay with it,” he said.
Still, going out for lunch gets expensive, “Food is expensive,” said Lapolla, “with our school lunch being part of tuition, that is always an option.”
Senior Brendan Beland said he leaves for lunch once a week, spending no more than 20 dollars. “Sometimes I like to leave just because it’s a social aspect, other times I just don’t like the lunch that's offered at school,” he said.
Enzo Rossi, another senior, said he leaves two to three times a week and prefers affordable options. “I like Alexander Poland because it's cheap,” he said, estimating eight dollars for a sub and drink.
Senior Lucy Wujek said she values the short break, “it gives me some independence and time outside of school with my classmates,” she said. Starbucks and Beyond Juicery are her go-to spots, spending 15-20 dollars weekly.
